Fractional CTO

You run the business.I’ll take the technical lead.

The priorities. The architecture. The people building it. I take responsibility for the technical decisions and the work that follows—whether I’m your first technical leader or joining the team you already have.

Someone has to own the next decision.

You have a product to build, customers to look after and more technical questions than you want to carry alone. The developers may be doing good work. You still need someone to decide what matters, challenge the plan and see the work through.

A fractional CTO gives your startup or established business technical leadership within an agreed allocation. If you are a non-technical founder, I can be your first or sole technical leader. I can also work with your existing developers, coordinate with an agency, or bring and lead the team we need. You work directly with me.

It is a useful fit when the responsibility keeps coming: a launch, a growing product, a difficult transition or a founder who has become the default technical manager. If you need one independent decision first, a technical second opinion can be the right starting point.

The direction—and the delivery.

Make the technical calls.

I work through product priorities, architecture and trade-offs with you. What should we build? What should we keep? What can wait? I explain the recommendation and its consequences so the business can make a sound decision.

Stay close to the build.

I stay hands-on where it matters and lead the contributors doing the work. We agree where I implement, where I review and where we need more engineering capacity. A roadmap needs someone responsible for carrying it into working software.

Build the capability around it.

That can include hiring assessment, team formation, review practices, delivery planning and the access and documentation needed to carry the work forward. Additional people and spending have an explicit scope and budget.

Here’s what that looks like.

I also built Varea’s engineering team and lead its architecture and delivery. Earlier, as CodeCooperation’s co-founder and CTO, I built and led the organisation behind 31 engineers, six product teams and 20+ startups and products.

The company and teams I built ↗

Clear responsibility. Visible work.

  1. Agree what I take on.

We define the decisions I own, your immediate priorities, access, reserved capacity and how we communicate. You retain the commercial and spending decisions we agree are yours.

  2. Understand enough to act.

I get into the product and the operation, work with the relevant people and make the first consequential decisions. Urgent work and orientation can move together.

  3. Show what is moving.

Priorities, working versions, decisions and obstacles stay visible. When something changes, we discuss the impact on scope, capacity and cost.

  4. Review what the business needs next.

We review the responsibility, progress and allocation. If someone else takes over, we plan the access, documentation and handover they need.

Before you ask.

Can you be our first technical hire?

Yes. An agency or an existing engineering team is not a prerequisite. I can be the first technical leader, build hands-on and bring in the right people when the scope needs them.

How much time will you spend with us?

We agree that around the responsibility and work your business needs. The allocation, contact expectations and any urgent-issue coverage are explicit before we start. I do not sell unlimited availability.

Do we have to buy an audit first?

No. We can start directly with technical ownership. A scoped second opinion is useful when a specific independent decision is the immediate need, rather than a mandatory step before every engagement.

How is the fee agreed?

The fee depends on the responsibility, reserved capacity and people involved. After the first conversation, I propose a scope, fee and review points before paid work begins.

Do I need a fractional CTO or a developer?

A developer can deliver a defined piece of work. A fractional CTO also takes responsibility for technical direction: what to build, the trade-offs, who should do the work and how delivery stays on track. I build hands-on too, including when there is no existing team. If you only need a specific decision checked, a technical second opinion may be enough.

Let’s take 30 minutes.

Bring me the question.

Tell me what you’re dealing with. I’ll share how I’d approach it and help work out a useful next step. You’re welcome to use that advice whether or not we work together.
